EQ topics for ages 13–14

Emotional intelligence, taken as seriously as arithmetic: naming feelings, reading other people, handling frustration and pressure, friendship, kindness and repair after a fight.

Early secondary. Topics carry the weight and the vocabulary of exam work, and expect a child who can hold several ideas at once.

What Identity Actually Is

Psychologists call the picture you carry of yourself your self-concept. It is not fixed, it is not always accurate, and — this is the interesting part — you are the one writing it. Flip every card.

  1. Researchers call it narrative identity: you take the things that happened to you and arrange them into a story about who you are. Two people can live nearly the same year and tell completely different stories about it.
  2. Trying on interests, opinions, music, politics and friendship groups is not being fake. It is called exploration, and the people who skip it tend to hit the same questions later, with more at stake.
  3. You at home, you with friends, you in class. These are roles, not masks. Everyone has them. It only becomes a problem when one of them feels like a costume you cannot take off.
  4. You badly overestimate how much others notice you. In one study, students wearing an embarrassing T-shirt guessed about half the room clocked it. The real figure was closer to a fifth. Nobody is watching you as closely as you think.
