How a Riddle Is Built
A good riddle is engineered, not improvised. It contains a true description of the answer, deliberately dressed so that your first reading points somewhere else. Once you can name the parts, you can dismantle almost any of them.

Every fair riddle describes the answer accurately. Nothing in a good riddle is a lie. If it says "it has hands", the answer really does have hands — just not the kind you pictured.

The words are chosen so the wrong reading is the easier one. This is not cheating; it is the entire craft. A riddle with no misdirection is just a definition.

A polysemous word carries several unrelated meanings: bank, light, bat, match. Riddles pick the meaning you use least often and lean on it.

"The old man the boats" reads as nonsense until you notice man is the verb and the old are the people. Your brain commits to a parse early and refuses to back out.
