The Four Techniques
Riddles feel like luck until you learn the handful of tricks they are built from. Each card below names a technique and says when to use it. Flip every one.

Write every line of the riddle as a separate condition. Then test each candidate answer against all of them, rejecting the moment one fails.

Ask which noun or verb you are reading the ordinary way. Face, hands, ears, bed, leaves, letters, ruler — these words carry two lives.

List what you pictured but were never told. Gender, size, material, time of day, whether anyone else was present.

Long riddles bury a small question under a big story. The final sentence is often much simpler than the paragraph before it.
