Four Kinds of Noun

A noun names something. But there are four different kinds, and knowing them makes your writing far sharper. Flip every card.

  1. Names ANY one of a kind — dog, city, river, teacher. Lower case, unless it starts a sentence.
  2. The special name of ONE particular thing — Ganga, Mumbai, Diwali, Anaya. Always a capital letter.
  3. Names a group as one thing — a flock of birds, a team, a bunch of grapes, a herd of elephants.
  4. Names something you cannot touch — courage, happiness, freedom, honesty. Real, but invisible.
