India by the Numbers

India is less a country than a continent's worth of people, languages and landscapes. Flip every card for a number that will surprise you.

  1. Over 1.4 billion — about one in every six people alive. India became the world's most populous country in 2023.
  2. 28 states and 8 union territories. Each has its own government, and many have their own official language.
  3. 22 official languages in the constitution — and over 700 spoken in total. Indian banknotes carry 17 scripts!
  4. The seventh largest country by area. From Kashmir to Kanyakumari is about 3,200 km — roughly London to Cairo.
