How Riddles Work

A riddle is a trap with a fair escape route. Once you know how the traps are built, you stop falling into them. Flip every card.

  1. Riddles hide the answer in a word people skim over. The first reading is for the story; the second is for the exact words.
  2. "What has a face and two hands but no arms?" — face and hands both have a second meaning. A clock.
  3. Your brain fills in details nobody stated. "A man walks into a bar" — you pictured a pub. It might be a metal bar.
  4. Long riddles often end with a much simpler question than the story suggests. Read the final line again.
